IP66 Floodlights

IP66 belongs where water arrives with pressure: driving rain, docks, wash bays. The failure mode that gets overlooked outdoors is not water getting in, it is moisture not getting out. A breather valve does more than a thicker housing — without one the inside fogs within a year.

The two IP digits govern two different things

This page is IP66: first digit 6 / 完全防尘 (solids), second 6 / 强喷水 (water). The common misreading is to treat it as one water-resistance score. The first digit is about dust and finger access; only the second is about water, and it grades **how the water arrives** — dripping, spraying, jetting, powerful jetting, and a close-range high-pressure hot jet are five different things.

The other point that gets missed: the rating applies to the complete fixture — terminal chamber, cable entry and breather included — not to the housing material. An IP66 fixture with a loose cable gland has already failed, whatever rating was specified.

Same power, different site

At 100–200 W and 12,000–25,000 lm, an IP66 fixture reaches some sites and not others. The test is not "is this IP high enough" but three questions: where does the water come from, does it arrive with pressure, and does it pool on the floor. One "with pressure" answer and you step up a level.

One more that has nothing to do with IP and is just as fatal: ambient temperature. In a sealed chamber at 100–200 W, every 10 ℃ above the rated ambient roughly halves driver life. On hot sites check the ta rating and the measured driver case temperature together — IP alone misses half the problem.

Four things to verify before ordering

① Whether flux and efficacy are quoted for the complete fixture or the light source — a 10–15% difference that changes the fixture count. ② Whether colour temperature and CRI are measured or nominal values; mixed CCT within one batch is the most common arrival dispute. ③ Driver brand and model, plus its derating curve at high temperature — it is the only part that really sets life. ④ The mounting kit list: chain, bracket and anchors in the box, or the site stops for a day.
