What IP rating is required for outdoor construction flood lights?
IP65 is the practical minimum for outdoor construction flood lighting — IP66 is the right choice where fixtures are exposed to jet washing, coastal spray, or heavy monsoon rain.
1. Reading the two digits
The first digit rates protection against solid objects (dust), the second against water. For outdoor luminaires the first digit is normally 6 (dust tight) and the second varies: 5 = protected against water jets, 6 = protected against powerful water jets, 7 = temporary immersion.
Note that IP ratings describe the housing, not the whole installation. A IP65 fixture with an unsealed cable gland is not an IP65 installation.
2. What the project environment changes
Coastal and marine projects add salt corrosion on top of water ingress — stainless steel fasteners and a suitable coating are worth specifying here. Areas with monsoon rainfall or frequent jet washing push toward IP66. For lighting mounted inside a canopy or under a roof, IP65 is usually adequate.
Also confirm the ambient temperature range and whether the fixture is surface-mounted or recessed, since recessed installation needs its own set of clearance and heat-dissipation conditions.
3. A common mistake
Buyers often assume a higher IP number means a better product overall. It does not — a very high rating with a poor driver, a cheap gasket or an untreated housing can fail faster than a well-built IP65. Ask what the housing material, gasket and driver are, rather than chasing the number.
