## The difference sits in four invisible parts

Two fixtures both badged 150 W can differ twofold in price, and the difference sits almost entirely in four places: ① the driver — the largest cost item and the only part that really sets life; ② aluminium mass and heatsink area — which fixes the driver case temperature; ③ lens material and UV grade — which decides whether it yellows in two years; ④ burn-in time — which decides who absorbs early failures.

The visible parts, by contrast, are usually the cheap ones: coating, colour box, printed manual. They are the easiest things to change and the least money to save. Compare on appearance and wattage alone and you have excluded exactly the four items where the difference lives.

## Count fixtures, not unit prices

150 W at 130 lm/W gives 19,500 lm, or 13,650 lm after a 0.7 maintenance factor. If another offer quotes 15% lower efficacy, holding the same floor illuminance takes about 18% more fixtures — a 10% lower unit price does not recover that. Step one in any comparison is putting both efficacies on the same basis.

Step two is the total: fixture count × unit price + accessories + freight. Step three is the replacement cycle: swapping a 400 W HID for 150 W cuts the draw to roughly a third, and the electricity difference usually exceeds the price gap within two years — but that has to be computed at the local tariff, not copied from someone else's case study.

## Four things to verify before ordering

① Whether flux and efficacy are quoted for the complete fixture or the light source — a 10–15% difference that changes the fixture count. ② Whether colour temperature and CRI are measured or nominal values; mixed CCT within one batch is the most common arrival dispute. ③ Driver brand and model, plus its derating curve at high temperature — it is the only part that really sets life. ④ The mounting kit list: chain, bracket and anchors in the box, or the site stops for a day.
